Basal Cell Carcinoma Discussion

Basal Cell Carcinoma Discussion

Kayla Peirano Basal cell carcinoma is when there is a DNA change in the outer layer of the skin’s basal cells due to damage. Seth had several risk factors that make him more likely to have a basal cell carcinoma. One major risk factor is that he has always lived in South Florida and surfs frequently. The main cause of basal cell carcinoma is exposure to UV radiation from the sun or from tanning beds. In Seth’s case, he was in the sun his entire life. Especially as a surf instructor, he is in the sun frequently and is exposed to UV radiation. Another risk factor is having fair skin. Since Seth is white, he is at more risk because his skin is fair. Statistics also show that males are more likely to get basal cell carcinoma. Another risk factor not related to Seth’s case is having a history of skin cancer. You are also more at risk if you are over the age of 50 since the majority of basal cell carcinomas occur in those over 50 (Skin Cancer Foundation, n.d.). Benign and malignant tumors have both similarities and differences. A tumor is when there is an abnormal excess of cells grouped together. A benign tumor is non-cancerous and a malignant tumor is cancerous (Cleveland Clinic, n.d). One similarity between benign and malignant tumors is their size. They can both grow to be very large. Although benign tumors are not cancerous, they can still cause damage. If the benign tumor is in a sensitive area such as near the heart, eyes, or nerves it can be very damaging. They also can both come back after being treated. One main difference is that malignant tumors are able to invade nearby tissues while benign tumors can only press against nearby tissue. Malignant tumor cells also have the ability to spread to other areas of the body while benign tumor cells cannot spread. Lastly, when looked at under a microscope, a healthcare professional would be able to tell if it is cancerous because cancer cells look different under a microscope (Eldridge L. 2022). Basal Cell Carcinoma Risk Factors. https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information… Student response #2 Jalissa Robinson Seth is a professional surfer he is often exposed to the sun and along with surfing he makes surfs broads. When Seth went to his doctor’s appointment, his doctor realized the skin growth on his eyebrow. This growth appeared shinny with pearly broader, which is believed to be a central ulcer with blood vessels engorged, this explains why the doctor believed it to be a basal cell carcinoma. The basal refers to the deepest layer of the epidermal ( skin ) this layer of the skin is also called the Stratum Germinativum (Human Anatomy and Physiology2021). Seth mentioned after being asked by his physician he noticed the growth 6 months ago, he didn’t think it was a bother because of his job dealing with dust and heat he would often develop pimples and would bleed once rubbed the wrong way though he made it happen to notice it the stop bleeding and crust over as time passes admitted it would appear to heal but won’t disappear. Basal cell carcinoma is a type of cancer that usually begins, it is developed from a person who has a lot of exposure to the sun which has UV radiation. This damages a person’s DNA because too much of this carcinoma along with it with other types can come about. A tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue in the body, there are 2 effects that cancer can have which are Benign Tumor/noncancerous (Fayed, 2021) this type of cancer is often nothing to worry about and can be properly taken care of with the required procure which may include of full removal of the affected site which is Seth’s eyebrow. Malignant tumor/cancerous means there is a tumor that is indeed made up of cancer cells this can be very dangerous because the tumor can metastasize which is very complicated in both benign and malignant tumors depending on the area the tumor is located by a vital organ such as the brain or heart.
